Entry - Design Competition for the Reconstruction of the Public Toilet and Refreshment Kiosk within Aberdeen Country Park P.H.A.B. Barbecue Site, by Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department AFCD), Architectural Services Department (ArchSD)

The design concept of "Boundless" takes reference to the landscape where two mountains intersect,Bennet's Hill and Victoria Peak. Taking advantage of the surrounding nature, the proposal tries to resolve the issues of inclusive:

i. Incorporate the nature of Aberdeen Country Park into public toilets and the kiosks-

The new snack kiosks and public toilets’ building form take reference to the landscape. The programs are separated to several small blocks to form a group of buildings. The layout mimics the composition of landscape element including "mountains", "valley" and "water".

Openings on the building facades bring natural light and ventilation into the interior. The architectural space and the natural environment are interconnected, regardless walking on the pedestrian or in the toilets, users can see the newly planted flowers and plants up close, and also see the giant trees in the distance!

ii. Allowing disabled to move freely and safely in the park

Provide wide routes, with intersecting and curly sidewalks to avoid dead ends, and enable wheelchair users to cycle back and forth within the site. The traveling route is at least 1500mm wide, healthy, and disabled people are encouraged to go side by side! The slope of min. 1:20 is used to absorb height difference in the site, wheelchair users can enjoy various spaces in the site.

iii. Re-arrange the building program to suit disabled

Allocating the disable toilets near the site entrance, the food washing sink in an open location for the ease of wheelchair users. Separating the working area of garbage trucks from the circulation of tourists to ensure the safety of all users.

iv. Focus on inclusiveness, encourage the collaboration between the able-bodied and the disabled

The sink for cleaning food is located at open space, adjacent to the snack kiosk, people can cooperate to prepare for the barbecue and have fun together!
